2006 Ford Focus turbocharger problem

I have a 2006 Ford Focus 1.6TDci LX that has only 70,000 miles on the clock, but has a failed turbo (bearings have collapsed!) The DPF is blocking, but the garage are sure they can burn it out, so it will be cleared. I have found a new turbo for £300ish, but understand that it will take more than five hours to change, and also £200+ extra for hoses etc.

The car is in otherwise good condition and I'm not sure whether to scrap it and cut my losses, or invest in the repairs and hope it doesn't happen again! From reading your page and other forums I know this is not unusual and there may also be other faults waiting to happen - please advise!

I regularly drive 60 miles to work and live in a rural area with lots of mud and bumpy lanes!

Unfortunately all the other things in the www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar entry could come up, so there is no guarantee that the proposed fix will work. Might do. Might not. Just can't say.
