Insurance company vague about my young son.

I have a 9 year old Ford Galaxy 1.9tdi which would be ideal for my son to learn to drive in when he turns 17 next July (it's large and slow). If I can't insure him on this car I would consider changing cars.

My insurance company (M&S) refuse to say whether they could add him as a named driver with a provisional licence on this car. They say I have to wait until he is 17 before they will give any opinion. If they say no, then he cannot drive until I change cars.

How can I find out which cars he would be insurable on with plenty of time to plan ahead and make sure we have an appropriate car?

I simply can't understand why your insurer has not simply said yes or no. But the cheapest cars to insure ate the Citroen C1, FIAT Panda Active 1.1, Nissan Pixo, Peugeot 107, Suzuki Alto and Toyota Aygo.
