Can I tax a car before the date the insurance becomes valid?
I have placed a deposit down on a used car that I am going to collect from the dealer on either the 13th or 14th October - a weekend.
The road tax is not included, and the seller has asked that I provide the proof of insurance so that he can purchase the tax. My current insurance is up for renewal on the 15th of October. I will be changing insurance companies, so in order to ensure that, when starting the new policy, I get my full NCB entitlement (which has been taken into account with my quotes), I don't want to start the new policy before the current one has expired; so for the one or two days until my current policy ends I will purchase temporary cover. I have to pick it up over the weekend and so cannot wait for the current policy to end on the Monday.
If I was to collect the car on the 14th (Sunday), and therefore start the temporary insurance from that day, could the seller tax the car with the insurance docs on the Friday BEFORE the policy becomes valid, or would I have to bite the bullet and temporarily insure the car from the Friday to facilitate this?! Or, if he can tax it before the policy start date, could he do this with the docs for the new policy starting on the 15th thereby negating the problem of the extra temporary insurance days?

The dealer could self-register it and tax it on his trade insurance. Would mean a delay in getting the V5 and an extra name on the V5 but would solve the problem. You simply fund the tax.
