Starting issues with a 2004 Megane

I have been experiencing an intermittant starting problem with my Renault Megane II for several weeks now. I press the start button, the engine turns over but fails to fire up.

The brake symbol and battery symbol show on the dash. Most of the time it will start on a second attempt after a few seconds, but occasionally it does not start even after several attempts.

In this case, I have to wait a while, then try again until it eventually starts. On one occasion an "Injection Fault" message appeared on the dash. It has been into the garage (local) twice thus far. The first time it was connected to the diagnostics machine, which pointed to the TDC sensor.

This was replaced, including the wiring. Alas, this failed to solve the problem. The fuel filter was replaced after a second visit (on the advice of an AA guy), but this too has not improved things.

I have noticed that the car starts ok in the morning and when leaving from work in the evening (i.e. when the engine is cold). The problem seems to be when trying to start the car within, say, a couple of hours of previously driving it.

This makes a visit to fill up at the petrol station interesting to say the least! At this point I am nervous of sending it back into the garage for fear of running up a huge bill (having already spent a reasonable amount) as they thought that the TDC sensor was almost certainly the issue.

I would greatly appreciate any advice you can give to point me in the right direction before contemplating another visit to the garage.

Well there is a known fault on this model. The wiring harness on the clutch pedal position switch breaks resulting in non starting.

Yours may be in the chafing situation which may allow staring sometimes, so worth checking out.

Other than that it may be the ECT (engine coolant temp) sensor.
