Petrol vs Diesel 4WD

We are considering a 4WD (or AWD) which will mostly be used in town - approx 6-10 mile journeys with no more than 6,000 miles per year. Which models should we consider and is petrol or diesel the better option?

For this use would have to be petrol and there aren't many petrol AWDs. Plenty of 2WD SUVs that look like 4WD but aren't. Think Qashqai, CR-V, CX-5 or RAV-4.
