DPF and Turbo failure on my Focus

The engine failure light came on in my 2008 Focus 1.6 TDCI and i discovered it was the additive for the DPF filter, which needed to be topped up. But I chose to have it removed. The night before it was removed the car lost power and I've been told it's the turbo that's failed.

I've read so many horror stories about the turbo failing again and again so my question is - would driving the car have caused the turbo to fail or do you think it could be the common problem that so many other people have had with the diesel injector seal?

I'm thinking of getting it fixed and selling it but don't know after spending over £1000 to get these repairs done.

It is actually illegal under EC law and UK Type Approval Regulations to remove a diesel particulate filter. There are a number of reasons for turbo failure on this model, usually that the oil feed to the turbo bearing gets choked with carbon from the engine having been switched off when the turbo was red hot.
