Buying a personalised DVLA plate for a new car

I have a new car on order from a Ford dealer (via Drive the Deal as recommended by you) due for delivery mid-September. If I buy a personalised plate from DVLA now can I have the car registered by the dealer with that number or will it have to be registered with whatever number the dealer is given and then have the personalised number transferred? If I do buy the plate now how long is the "period of entitlement"?

Buy the reg, keep it on a retention certificate, allow the car to be registered in the normal way by the dealer, then transfer your reg to it and have the reg on your insurance and tax disc changed.
