4x4 or estate?

I currently own a Jeep 4x4 2 ltr diesel. It is reliable but expensive on fuel especially on short journeys. I travel about 30 miles per week but want to go up North 2xs year(400 each way) and not getting mileage. Have 2 labradors and lots of luggage. Looking for a cheap to run 4x4 or estate - good on short and long distances, reliable + cheap to run, up to £2000 - ant suggestions please?
