Buying my first UK car

I am looking to buy my first car in the UK (Northern Ireland), I would prefer to buy second hand and can spend around £5000. I work as a vet so will be driving long distances and need to carry a reasonable amount of equipment so fuel consumption and space are important.

It doesn't need to be 4 wheel drive but sensible ground clearance would be beneficial.

When I lived in South Africa I fell in love with the Opel bakkies (Corsa pick ups) but they do not seem to exist here, do you have any suggestions?
