Replacing tyres like for like?

My garage have warned me that the tyres on my 2010 plate VW Sharan SE (New style) are approaching the minimum tread depth. The tyres currently fitted are Continental "Conti-Seal" tyres - not run flats, but "self sealing".

There is no spare, so we are fully reliant on not having a major blow out. Would you recommend replacing like for like? Or should I switch to run-flats? Is there any issue with the wheel size or tyre availability - someone said it wasn't a common size? Should I buy a spare for long journeys?

Ford fits self-sealing tyres. BMW is an advocate of runflats. I think the tyres are 215/60 R16, which is not the most common of sizes. No Michelin ZPs listed. The Bridgestone website isn't working. I'd replace like with like. How long did they last, by the way?
