Petrol or diesel Golf

I have been driving a Volkswagen Golf mk4 1.4 2001 for over three years now. I am planning to buy a VW Golf mk 1.9tdi. Is the TDI cheaper on fuel?

Yes. But not cheaper on the running repairs it may well need.
