In car cameras

After a few months reading about whiplash fraud and after witnessing two accidents of cars I was following in the last 6 months and in the same period having had two near misses (not my fault), I have purchased an in-car video camera (bottom end £45 incl card - reviewed on YouTube and excellent) which records to mini SD card on a loop.

Friends have asked various questions - would the footage be admissible in court? What are insurance companies views on these? Are there any issues recording people without their consent - you can't for example have home security cameras record the public outside your home off your property.

Are there any other issues with using these cameras - one friend asks if I made a mistake could I be forced to hand over the card for use against me? Are they OK for use abroad?

If the footage has not been doctored then yes, it would be admissible in court. Insurance companies generally don't care about apportioning blame and only want to get the claim settled, but the footage would be useful in any dispute. If you want to worry about recording people and their actions without their consent, then you better throw the thing away. Obviously if you are at fault the first thing to do is destroy the evidence against you.
