Buying a used, economical car. What do you suggest?

What car would you recommend I buy to replace our Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin? I want similar ease of access that the Shogun provides (to help my back problems!) and would like a more economical vehicle. I have about £6,000, plus the Y reg, 3-door auto Pinin to trade in.
