Idling problem with a 1997 Audi A4

I have an Audi A4 2.6 and it has done 207,000miles. I had been fine for ages but over the last 500 miles it's got a problem with revving up to 1500rpm on start up. Then it was reving 1500 to 1800 and bobbing by itself and when driving.

It seems to be intermittent. I have used a fuel cleaner, but maybe it's just crud in system? Thought I'd ask if you can help, as the car only worth £500 and I haven't money to spend diagnosing.

Well although not worth much, it may still be best to have a diagnostic check carried out as this should highlight what the fault may be. Could be one of the many sensors. A diagnostic should cost around £60.

Without a diagnostic you may finish up changing other parts/sensors and wasting time and money.

A reader has suggested another possible cause could be the engine temperature sensor.
