Problem with a Mazda 121 automatic

I have a Mazda 121 (1997) 1.25 Zetec (which looks a lot like the old ford Fiesta to me). It's an automatic but recently its developed a problem on its start up when its been stood for a while and the engine is cold.

When i start it and put it into Drive or select Reverse, it stutters quite badly and quite often stalls too soon afterwards. It's becoming a real pain and seems to be getting worse. I dont know whats wrong or what I need to fix this, if it can be fixed? Do you have any thoughts or ideas on whats wrong, is this common?

It's a CVT gearbox. Bit of a disaster. Get rid, if you can.
