Sept 2011 Golf - flat battery problem
I purchased a brand new Golf 1.4 TSI 5dr in Sept 2011 and have been very happy with it. When it was parked at home 2 days ago I noticed that both front windows were completely open (I had left them closed). I started the engine and shut them. The next day I drove to and from work (a short journey) and the car was fine. I did not leave any light on and I had not used the radio. I didn't use the car the following day but when I came to use the car the next day it wouldn't start and was completely dead (in fact I couldn't even open it until I could advice from VW assist on how to open the door with the key). The VW Assist person came quickly and said that the battery was completely flat although he said the battery was OK. He checked what he could (eg window mechanisms etc) in the car and could not find any fault. He advised me to check it in and get the dealer to have a look for a fault. Have you any advice for what could have gone wrong? I am concerned about an electronic intermittent fault that could cause the car not to start when I am away. For info this week there has been some heavy rain and the car is parked in the open in a drive way.
Thank you, Helen Lumley

Two things could have happened.
One is that you inadvertently pressed the button on the fob/key again and that sent the windows down. It's a 'characteristic' of VAG fobs. Water then got inside the door and caused a draindown.
Or that moisture inside the door penetrated the locking and windows ECU situated there and sent the windows down, admitting yet more water that further got into the electrics and caused the draindown.
