Issues when buying a motorhome - where do I stand?

I recently purchased a very expensive motorhome from a dealer. Before completing the purchase the dealer agreed to rectify an engine manangement warning light, completely valet the vehicle, touch up some minor bodywork damage, service the vehicle and complete a habitation check.

Despite assuring me over the phone that everything had been resolved when I went to collect the van it had not been touched. It was so bad that the tyres were all at least 3 bar below the approved pressure and the van was filthy inside and out.

It is doubtful that any service had been carried out or appliances checked. As we had switched our insurance over and already driven a long distance twice he assured us that if we took the vehicle that he would rectify the problems at our convenience.

When we got home we noticed that a large chunk had cracked off one of the windows so we rang him immediately and he promised to order a new window.

Obviously we were very unhappy at the service we had received and did not want to return the vehicle to him as we had no faith that the engine management issue could be resolved as this is only possible by a Fiat dealer. The following week he eventually agreed that we could take the van to our nearest Fiat dealer to sort out the fault.

They spent 2 hours diagnosing and finding the fault and took the front of the van off, eventually finding a faulty wire to the cooling fan.

When they rang him to confirm that they could fix the fault he said that they had to put the thing back together and we would have to take it down to him to fix (a non-Fiat garage!) We disputed this and eventually with much bad grace he paid for the fix.

We are now unsure where we stand with regard to the damaged window. It was not pointed out to us at any time, yet is a major component of a motorhome, costing £250 to replace. Can you advise us whether we have any legal rights with regard to this? Should he have pointed it out to us or is it tough luck that we didn't spot it?

Yes, your rights are here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights/ But this only works as long as you keep your claim below £5,000. I fit escalates to a rejection of the vehicle, then it goes to the full county court and gets very expensive.
