Buying two cars - one for town and motorway, one for farm and trees

I'll be selling a Daihatsu Sirion, Kia Soul and LR Freelander and want to replace with two vehicles.

One car for day-to-day use, must be comfortable, with a good ride (unlike the Kia), fuel efficient, a little bit fun (ie not a dreary box), good for town and motorways (50/50), doing 10k miles pa.

The other a 4x4 with good load space (probably a pick-up), rugged, reliable, good off-road for farm, forestry, etc. doing 8k pa.

I'm bewildered by the choice available and know what I don't want (ie a VW). I thought maybe a new Isuzu D-Max or new Ford Ranger for the 4x4, but stuck on the car.

The new Ford Ranger 2.2 diesel (you don't have to go for the 3.2): www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/ford/ford-ranger-2.../

Softish ride and fun makes it very difficult to pick the other car. Maybe a C-Max on 15" wheels with 195/65 tyres. If you go for a Fiesta, the best ride is on 14" wheels with 175/65 tyres.
