Loss of coolant on a 1989 Volkswagen
I have had since new a 1989 Golf 3 door 1300cc hatchback which continues to run sweetly, apart from one long-term problem which has mystified mechanics.
Since 1997, the car has suffered coolant loss and required constant topping up.
The situation has now become extreme on a recent 200 mile round trip, it was necessary to introduce 1.7 litres of coolant at the end of each 100 mile leg.
My usual mechanic has come to the conclusion that the problem is head gasket related and as a result, given the age of the car, not worth the cost of repair. I have tried K Seal on two occasions. Can you help?

Might be nothing more than an airlock that simply needs to be purged. I've had airlocks on 80s VWs, seemingly for no reason, that I got rid of.
