Don’t get out enough
We live in a small village and for the last two winters have struggled to get out. I am now thinking of replacing my BMW 1 Series, with an AWD car. I would like to purchase the X3, but the wait is close to 10 months. The car has to be capable of carrying two sets of Golf Clubs, and of course be economical. Do you have any suggestions? Is a Freelander like taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut?

The most economical, lowest CO2 4WD, for sensible money, is the Toyota Urban Cruiser 1.4 D-4D AWD. Alternatively a Suzuki SX4 SZ5 1.6i or 2.0 diesel 4WD. Obviously at their best in winter on cold weather ‘winter’ tyres.

Reasonably spacious five-seater with a decent boot, strong and economical diesel, tidy handling in 4WD.
Chunky and quirky looks. A rare sight on UK roads. 1.4 D-4D AWD surprisingly enjoyable to drive.
