You mentioned in your column last week that the insurer of a motor vehicle should be made aware of any change, however small, that is made to a car as it may affect the validity of the policy held. Does this mean that the insurer should be informed of the change of wheels to winter tyres? If the normal specification is for low profile tyres and winter tyres are used should, again, the insurer be informed. Is there likely to be an additional premium for this change in spec, even if, by doing so, you are adding to the safety of the vehicle and potentially preventing an accident?

Best to disclose to the insurer. Some insist you do. Some don't. But the ABI has ruled that insurer must not charge you an extra premium for the 'modification' of the car from standard.
