I have a 2005 Nissan X-trail SVE 2.2 which I use for towing a caravan. I've always towed within the 1,500kg that is about the kerbside weight of this model (caravan MTPLM is approx 1,350kg). I'm looking for a new caravan and the model that I favour is actually too heavy for my car to deal with and gives 104% rather than near the ideal 85%. While looking at options, I noticed from the Caravan Club’s Tow Car Awards, that the weight of the latest model X-Trail is significantly higher than mine, to the tune of 160kg. This means that if I were able to afford a new X-Trail, I could easily tow my caravan of choice. Surely there can't be that much difference between the models, or are the figures quoted for my model completely up the spout. Any comment would help me understand where I stand.

I checked my road test at: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests. The original X-Trails 2.2DCI had a kerb weight of 1,525kg and could tow up to 2,000kg. The current model has a kerb weight of 1,482 – 1,733kg and the 2.0dCi 173 manual can tow up to 2,200kg.
