Bling and buy

I have a 2008 Vauxhall Vectra Estate 2.0 SRI fitted with low profile 235/35 R19 tyres that are costing me a small fortune. I average 15,000 miles a year, and every year all tyres have to be replaced. Is it possible to replace them with normal alloy wheels and standard tyres? Is it financially sensible to do so, and if it is, how can I do it?

Vauxhall did this to capture the blingers market. I remarked on it in my test of a Vectra in 1994 here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/vauxhall/vauxhall-.../ I think that tyre makers supply this type of tyre at attractively low rates to carmakers because they know they will rake in the money on replacements. The most sensible thing to do is switch to standard 16" wheels with something like 55 profile tyres that give the same rolling circumference. There will always be a blinger somewhere who will buy your 19” wheels and tyres on eBay.

Far better than previous Vectra. Now with decent handling and an excellent ride. Plenty of safety kit. Roomy in the front. Big boot. Good looks.
