Can I use my satnav system, which indicates the locations of speed cameras, whilst driving in France?
My wife and I are intending to travel to Slovakia from the UK by car. The TomTom tells us that the quickest route will mean travelling for a while in France. However I believe that I read a response from you some time back whereby it is either not allowed to have a machine indicating the whereabouts of a speed enforcement camera in France, or the French Police take a dim view of it and can confiscate the car. As you are aware satnavs, apart from telling you how to get to one place or another, also contain warnings of speed enforcement cameras. Does this mean we cannot use a satnav in Europe? As an ex-police officer I find this most strange, but then the French always seem to do everything the opposite way round from the rest of Europe. Can you help?

Satnavs that give locations of fixed cameras are okay. They also usually show the local speed limit. Devices that detect radar or laser signals in mobile police speed traps are not ok.

I have attempted to translate a French press release about that country’s new decree banning all forms of speed trap detector whether reader detector or satnav locators of fixed traps.
