Being arthritic, on your advice I bought a Mazda 2 Auto. After 250 miles I have to say it is the best car I have ever had. Many thanks. From time to time you have dealt with the pros an cons of using both feet. Could you repeat that please and would it be suitable for an 85-year old?

Brilliant. Smashing little car. My point about left foot braking while manoeuvring is that it enables you to stop the car instantly if an emergency occurs. If you are driving single footed, the car can drive many metres under power before you can get your right foot off the accelerator and onto the brake. That’s why so many automatic drivers have crashes while manoeuvring. Skilled drivers left foot brake automatics all the time. They can be driven much more smoothly that way. But at 85, maybe better not to try to learn that. Essential only to left foot brake while manoeuvring in tight spaces in order to retain full control over the car.
