Giving up Golf
I am exploring the possibility of replacing my son's current VW Golf 1800 (purchased April 2001) with either a VW Polo or Skoda Fabia. My son who lives in Islington at the side of the Congestion Zone is keen on the Polo but I wonder whether a Skoda that also has the VW engine is also worth consideration. My son does not do a big mileage and at this time his main consideration is 1. Low road tax - 2. No congestion charges - 3. Reliability with good fuel economy. The great thing with VW's is that they keep their value but if you care to add further similar makes they would be appreciated.

The Polo might keep its value quite well because of the perception of VW reliability and the status this confers on owners of the cars. But the SEAT Ibiza with the same range of engines and even lower CO2 is much more stylish. And the new KIA Rio 1.1 diesel is even better, with every one of them VED and London Congestion Charge exempt, a 7 year warranty, and just £259 for the first three services. Alternatively a couple of petrol-engined cars are VED and Congestion Charge exempt: the FIAT 500 TwinAir and the Toyota IQ 1.0 litre.
