I drive a 2006 BMW 320d that I have had for a year and I understand it has a diesel particulate filter. The car has covered 60,000 but I only drive about 5,000 miles a year. From reading your column I realise this filter could possibly cause me problems although none are evident at the moment.
I understand the cost to replace a DPF in a BMW can be around £1,200. I have seen a company who offers to alter the software in the ECU (Engine Control Unit) so that the particulate filter can be removed. The company states that the diesel particulate filter is not a legal requirement and is not required for MOT test. Is this correct and would it be advisable to have the filter removed or should I change the car for a petrol model?

I think this could bring trouble in the future because the car's emissions are based on it having a DPF, so removing the DPF could be construed as illegal and the MoT test may be extended to include a check on the DPF.
