A Winter’s Trail

I am looking to change my car in the next month and am due to be driving approximately 500 miles a week on predominately A and B roads (Woodhead Pass). I would like to consider a 4WD - especially with the harsh winters we have been experiencing.

However, I also would like something that is not too heavy on fuel and looks the part. I currently have a 57 plate Beetle Cabriolet and will be part exchanging this - and have an approximate budget of £10,000 in addition to my part exchange. I would really appreciate your input as I am currently going round in circles with different 4wd and 'pick-up' vehicles.

Pick-ups give quite a harsh ride, but the best and most economical is the Isuzu Rodeo 2.5 I-TEQ that with 4WD will do about 36 - 38mpg. On the other hand, the most economical 4WD SUV is the Toyota Urban Cruiser 1.4 D-4D for about £16,000. That's under 130g/km so just £95 tax.
