Why don't motorway drivers check over their shoulders before changing lane?
You are absolutely correct that a lorry driver's awareness of other drivers will affect the way he acts. Those other drivers have a duty to let the truck driver know where we are. The Highway Code states that you should not get too close to the vehicle you intend to overtake. I take your important point also of simultaneous movement from two different vehicles potentially heading for the same space, particularly on motorways. How many drivers follow the Highway Code instruction to look round/over the shoulder and check the blind spots that are not necessarily revealed in your mirror? Last year a local lady was killed when a truck she was overtaking pulled out, it is said into the truck's blind spot.

Can happen with cars too. You pull out of lane one to overtake a truck, and some myopic clown swoops into the same space from lane three.
