Shaken or swirled?

I need some advice about my son who recently bought a second hand 2003 Ford Mondeo from a dealer. He paid about £2,000 (half cash and half credit card). The car had done about 90k miles and seemed OK. After the first few days the exhaust became noisy (we think it was the ‘cat’) and so he took it back to the dealer and they repaired it. However at the weekend (2 weeks after he bought it), he was driving home on the M25 and it started to make a terrible noise in the engine and a warning light came on and so he pulled over. He rang the RAC who towed him home. The mechanic said it sounded serious (valve in the engine?) when he turned the engine on (turned it straight back off again when he heard the noise). My son has rung the dealer and they said he would have to get the car towed to them (about an hour away). We investigated this and it would cost £175 (RAC quote). He had a tow 'on' option but it was limited to 10 miles. The dealer also did not sound as happy to help this time although he said they would look at it if he could get the car to them. So my question is, where does my son stand, his rights, with this situation etc? The car supposedly came with a 3-month warranty.

Presumably this is a petrol engined 1.8 or 2.0 litre Mondeo and I think what has happened is it has ingested its inlet manifold swirl flaps, which is fairly terminal for a £2,000 banger. With a £2,000 car that originally sold for £15,000 - £20,000, dealer liability is limited. So just hope that the dealer or the warranty covers it. Otherwise Small Claims track and you'll probably win, but I think that treats the dealer unfairly. The first thing to do after buying a 1.8 or 2.0 Mk III Mondeo is remove the swirl flaps from the inlet manifold.
