Why am I getting unsolicited text messages regarding a claim for an accident I haven't had?
I keep receiving unsolicited text messages from an identified number to my mobile phone, with the following wording: "Free message. Our records indicate you may be entitled to £3,250 for the accident you had. To apply free reply CLAIM to this message. To opt out text STOP."
I've not had an accident, it's an obvious try-on, but I wonder how many people fall for it and with what result? So far I haven't texted 'STOP'; if I do, will it simply spur them on or end the matter, in your opinion? Also, how did they pick my number?

Unfortunately it's not illegal for these people to canvass for business, but it would be illegal to make the spurious claim they say you are entitled to. All calls should be reported to: the claims regulators: www.ICO.gsi.gov.uk or by letter to Insurance Data Base Services Limited 6-12 Capital Drive, Linford Wood, Milton Keynes MK14 6XT, or Monitoring and Compliance Unit, Claims Management Regulation, 57-60 High Street, Burton on Trent, Staffs DE14 1JS
