I'd like to replace my Ford Mondeo with a Jaguar X-Type - is there anything else I could consider?

I have had a succession of seven Mercedes-Benz cars, which have found most satisfactory apart from high servicing bills. Three years ago I sold the last one when I moved to London and bought a Ford Mondeo diesel. It has been a pleasure to drive. I am looking at the possibility of buying my last car and thought about having a touch of luxury by buying a used 2.2D Jaguar X-Type. Is that a wise move or can you suggest anything instead of a Jaguar with a touch of luxury?

A used Jaguar X-Type 2.2D is the same as a Mk III Mondeo 2.2 diesel under the skin. It's not as sophisticated as the current Mondeo, but with the benefit of a chain cam engine. I think that Mercedes-Benz has now got its act back together and that the current W204 MB C200 and C220CDI are good, potentially long-lasting cars, but best bought in standard spec on 16-inch wheels with deep profile tyres. Do not go for 'Sport' spec. The latest C220CDI manual is under 121g/km CO2, so is only £30 a year to tax. Unfortunately the automatic isn't.
