We're looking for a car to carry two adults and three children on long journeys - would you recommend the Mk1 Mercedes-Benz A-Class?

I just wondered whether you could give me some advice on replacing our second car. We've only got about £1,500 to spend and need something that can seat two adults and three children. It also needs to be fairly economical but capable of doing a 500-mile motorway round trip every couple of weeks. I've tried looking at various websites and there doesn't seem to be one particular car that stands out. We had thought about a Mk I Mercedes A Class until we read your review.

Mondeos are disposable cars and £1,500 is getting close to point of disposal, but they are fantastic value. You'll get a Mk III 1.8 or 2.0 petrol for your budget. First job: have the swirl flaps removed from the inlet manifold. The diesels are more expensive and more trouble.
