Taking sides
I am 69 years old, and despite driving tens of thousands of miles in this country, have never driven on the Continent. My wife and I would like to go to France for a holiday, but I am not sure if I could adapt to driving on the right safely and confidently. Are there any publications worth reading that would help me overcome my doubts and fears and would give me useful information about continental driving and roadcraft.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists recently published some advice which you will find here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/legal--motoring-advice/2.../ The most dangerous times are moments of confusion, such as when you have got lost, stopped, consulted a map, then set off again. That is when you are most likely to drive off on the wrong side of the road. So it wouldn't be daft to stick a big arrow across your windscreen pointing to the kerb on the right hand side. You will need to take particular care at road junctions when turning left because you may be faced with four possible entries and unexpected oncoming traffic
