Why do some automatic drivers still not use left-foot braking, especially when starting the engine?
A friend came to see us. When leaving he sat in his new-to-him, 2008/58 Mercedes-Benz A180 diesel auto. Without putting his legs anywhere near the pedals he turned the key and started the engine. To my exclamation he replied that it had a micro switch, so it wouldn't be in gear. Having driven automatics on and off since 1957, I am 100 per cent behind your campaign to use left foot braking; critically when starting the engine. There seems to be an attitude of “I'm entitled to drive” rather than an understanding that it is a continual learning process. If you can't manage the controls don't do it, motor vehicles can be very dangerous.

I write what I think is common sense on the basis of experience. Here is a recent one:
"I have to emphasise that in Bangkok traffic, left foot braking is not just recommended, it is a life-saver. It certainly saved multiple injuries to a motorbike taxi driver and his fat passenger who ‘U’ turned around me left-to-right while I was making a right turn. If I’d been right foot braking they’d have been under the car before I could have stopped it, after which we’d all have got T-boned by three lanes of accelerating traffic."
