Is it safe to fit winter tyres of a lower speed rating than normal tyres?
I'm going to follow your advice and use one of the firms you recommended for a set of rims and cold-weather tyres for next winter. But I am confused about sizes and speed ratings. Clearly I have to use an approved tyre size and wheel size (next size down gives better handling and more room for chains I believe?) But what about the speed and load ratings? The speed rating on the car at the moment is W and I can't find winter tyres with that sort of rating. Likewise, the load rating is higher than that which I can find on winter tyres. So presumably it isn't illegal, dangerous or against manufacturer recommendations to use lower rated tyres in the winter providing one doesn't exceed the specs of that cold weather tyre? And having received some contradictory advice already, what do you recommend as the best position to store tyres on rims during the opposite season?

Now is the cheapest time to buy winter tyres. Winter tyres like Pirelli Sottozero are rated at 130mph and I've done 130mph on them in Germany. When you go down wheel sizes and go up in tyre profile you want to try to get the rolling circumference of the tyre as close as possible to the originals. BMW wheel/tyre packages already are. See: www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/parts-and-accessories/20.../ Remember to inform your insurer. To store the tyres, build a shelf in your garage. I put one over the door. Store them flat, off the ground, in the dark.
