Where does the money from speed cameras go?

I have recently been dunned for £60 for speeding by an unmanned camera, all, apparently, in the interests of road safety. This raises the question of who audits the money? I feel that it merely goes to finance the lifestyles of some self-important little busy bodies since I have never seen any evidence that the money contributes to road safety. And what is meant by 'road safety' anyway? More cameras? More sleeping policeman? Presumably all these people are far too busy attending workshops, seminars, meetings about meetings or being entertained by their consultants on freebies and do not really do anything, but need my money to do it with.

It used to go to traffic camera partnerships who used it to finance their lifestyles. But now it goes to the Treasury and the Treasury re-distributes it. One of the more sensible decisions our new government made was to withdraw funding from traffic camera partnerships, who squawked loudly, but, as we have seen, crash rates actually decreased since their nice little earners were taken away. If you get the chance of a speed awareness course, take it. Much cheaper in the long run than points because it doesn't affect your insurance.

I have recently received an NIP from a mobile speed camera. The camera 'warning' signs on the approach to the camera van were obscured by foliage. Do I have a defence to the ticket?
