Shifting circumstances

My problem is probably not uncommon. Some 5 years ago I suffered a series of strokes, which left me with an insubordinate left leg. I was advised by our local assessment centre to switch to automatic transmission. Probably in denial of the enforced change I insisted on semi-automatic, the rationale being lower consumption hence lower emissions, and lower VED.

So we obtained a Ford Fusion automated manual. Last week, as I passed a bus at a bus stop on a hill and as I changed down for more power the gearbox 'brain' failed. Very embarrassing. Fortunately our village garage came out and collected it and has passed it to the Ford dealer who has diagnosed solenoid failure and possible actuator failure at an estimated cost of nearly £2,000, more than the car is worth.

I am reluctant to let go as I have come to respect the Fusion for its driveability, very Fiesta-like, and load carrying capacity, for a wife who shops on an industrial scale. I would like to ask is it practical to get another semi-automatic or should I forget it and go for a manual? My son-in-law suggests a diesel auto, but on our low mileage I think not, I would appreciate your advice on a replacement vehicle.

Some automated manuals work quite well, but they have a more limited life than torque converter or CVT autos, all succumbing to clutch or actuator failures at some time, usually after about 6 years. Honda has just switched the Jazz back from i-shift (automated manual) to CVT-7 (full CVT with a torque converter clutch).

That is very practical. The new Toyota Verso S Multidrive S also has a CVT-7. The KIA Venga, Hyundai ix20 and Nissan Note autos are all 4-speed torque converter and very practical. Less practical (because the seats don't fold flat), but more fun is the Mazda2 1.5 Activematic. They're all tested and video tested here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/
