Did my Mercedes-Benz dealer alter my tyre pressures to improve fuel economy?

I purchased a new Mercedes-Benz E220CDI in December 2009. In January I received a call from the dealership asking me to take the car in for a warranty job to be carried out. I took the car in and waited about 90 minutes for the work to be carried out, which involved the car being taken into the workshop. Around 10 days later I checked the tyre pressures. The recommended pressures (shown inside the fuel flap) had always been 32PSI unladen, but the label now read 38PSI unladen.

I phoned the dealership and asked had the label been changed during the warranty recall? He denied any change and said the recall had been to insert one page into the owners handbook. This car has been in the dealership three times during the summer of 2010 for investigation into poor fuel economy (34mpg) and for its first service in Dec 2010. At no time has anyone advised me that the tyres were underinflated by 6psi. Have any of your readers experienced similar problems? After inflation to the new pressures MPG has improved from 34mpg to 38.5mpg.

That's extraordinary. Makes sense, but I had not heard of it before. I will now record it in car-by-car breakdown at www.honestjohn.co.uk and see what the reaction is. Incidentally the revised version of the Mercedes-Benz C220CDI manual is now down to 117g/km CO2 and £30 tax.
