I am tempted by the 20% “VAT” equivalent savings on offer by Skoda on petrol engined Skoda Octavias and I am considering changing my current car a 2006 Skoda Octavia L&K Estate 105 PDI owned by me from new with 16 K miles on the clock for a new Skoda Octavia L&K Estate 1.8TSI I would be grateful for any advisory comments you may have on the merits or otherwise of making this move, I expect that the running costs may be a little higher but the initial saving in the purchase price is around £3.5k (more if I factor in the VAT savings on factory fitted extras).
I should say that my annual mileage is modest, around 6K and the car is not used for towing or any heavier work than transporting my wife, self and dog around but we do like the comfort of the L&K. I also would expect to keep the car for at least 5 years perhaps longer now that I am retired.

Go for it. The chain cam 1.8TSI 160 is a much better engine, nicer to drive and comparatively trouble-free compared to the diesels. No EGR failures. No DPF failures. No DMF failures. No Turbo failures. No timing belt to have to replace ever 4 years or 40k miles. The trade off is poorer fuel economy. But why save pennies when doing so can leave you spending pounds?
