Points scorer

Last year I collected 12 penalty points that will remain with me for the next 3 years. I currently have an Audi A4 Cabriolet 3.0 with 100,000 miles, but prior to that a Jaguar XKR and a TVR Cerbera. I favour cars that have style. Most of my mileage is in the town now - as little as 100 miles per week. In the past there have been many more motorway miles. I have two children and so need a car with 4 seats. The Audi has ticked many boxes, but fuel economy is not great. I'm debating between a A5, a TT or an Alfa 159 Sportwagon, or an Alfa Giulietta but still like the German reputation for build quality, although the Italian flair is attractive to me. Used is preferable to new. Also is it time for my first diesel? I don't want to pay more than £500 pm in loans or tax. Company car schemes are an option; I just need to find the right model. Does stylish but sensible exist? It feels like a heart verses head choice.

A diesel will be a severe liability for your type of use, clogging its particulate filter continually. At just 100 miles a week you could consider an entirely different type of motoring, in a Nissan Leaf. No tax. Very low running costs. And no grossly inefficient starting of internal combustion engines just to drive short distances. People might even think that at last you've had an attack of common sense.
