Resting insured
With regard to KC's letter, the most charitable thing I can say about motor insurers practices towards drivers is that they are ignorant of the nature of risk and how it arises. I have written several classes of insurance, including motor, over more than 40 years and can say, without hesitation, that some of the best risks have been those I accepted after they had suffered a big claim. This is probably because, regardless to the circumstances of accidents, there is an air of inevitability that things will eventually go wrong in any activity undertaken continuously over a period of years. The older age of a driver is largely irrelevant in the issue of risk, as Saga Insurance has discovered, which is why it targets the over 50s drivers. In any case the practice of loading a premium simply because someone has made one claim has always been contrary to good underwriting practice. The British public are being ripped off by this sharp practice.

In that case you should set up as an insurer basing your policies and your premiums on your assessment of the underwriting risk.
