Can I suggest my tip for home-made snow chains to your readers?
In the December driving conditions, can I share with you a cheap and effective snow driving aid? All that is needed are a few lengths of polypropylene rope, each one long enough to feed through the driven wheel round the back of the tyre, back to the front and tied tightly. I recommend about six per wheel. With wide tyres it is helpful to use a wire coat hanger to retrieve the loose end from the inside of the wheel, bring it through and tie it tightly. This will act as a cheap, disposable snow chain that will not destroy the tyre, will fit any size tyre and works quite well in most conditions with the exception of solid ice. I have used this on many occasions and always keep 12 lengths of rope and a wire coat hanger in the boot for when I need them.

A cheap and brilliant idea. Many thanks. The ropes will catch snow that itself provides traction against snow.
