Can I offer a tip about hiring a car in Malaysia and Singapore?
In a follow up to your comment about the question about car/van hire in Malaysia and Singapore, I did this a few years ago. The cost to hire a car in Singapore was more than double the cost of hiring the car in Johor Baru (which is at the crossing point between Singapore and Malaysia but on the Malaysian side). You can get a taxi to take you across the border and then pick up your hire car from Johor Baru. There were several car hire companies there and I used Avis that was prebooked from the UK.

Many thanks for the heads up. I landed at Johor Baru once, en route from Bali back to the UK. Seemed to be completely surrounded with rubber trees. But you have definitely come up with a travel solution. Be careful driving in Malaysia, especially when it’s raining. There was a nasty bus crash in December in which a lot of people died.
