Can I offer a tip to your readers who suffer from leg cramps in smaller cars?
In support to FD of Brentwood’s complaint about severe pains in his right leg, I also suffered a similar pain after changing my large, comfortable Volvo to the smaller variant. I found that I suffered from leg pains on and after long motorway journeys. I eventually traced this to inadequate support to the thigh from the shorter seats that are fitted in the smaller model cars.
I noticed that my right (accelerator) leg was not resting on the seat squab but was only being supported by the base of my body and my heel. This meant that the leg muscles were having to be used to hold the leg in place on the accelerator, and on motorways they virtually locked in position. The fact that FD is over six feet tall would not help this situation. After re-adjusting the seat, and providing support for the thigh with a rolled up towel, the pain diminished.

Some small cars are much better than others. I was very impressed by the Mazda 2 Activmatic over 1,900 kilometres, more than 850 of them in a single day. Nice long seat squabs and no pain at all. Test and video: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/mazda/mazda-2-auto
Surprisingly, the FIAT 500 also has very comfortable long seat squabs. I’ve done 300 miles non-stop in them many times.
