Starting problems with a Polo

I own a Volkswagen Polo Twist 1.2 3-cylinder.

It has recently developed an intermittent starting problem. It doesn't matter whether the weather is warm or cold. Sometimes it starts straight away and other times it takes about five or six times to start. Once running, it seems to work fine. It has 55k miles on the clock and has recently had a full service and an MOT. Can anyone help as I don't really want to take it to a main dealer?
