Petrol or diesel?

I'm downsizing from an Almera 1.5, and I was wondering what was better to get.

I want to spend less than £1000 as it is just for a short period, and have narrowed it down to a Renault Clio 1.2 16v petrol, or a Peugeot 206 2.0 Diesel, both 2002.

It will be for mainly short commutes, with 1 or 2 longer motorway trips a month. Both are of a similar price. From my understanding, the 206 will need longer runs otherwise the DPF will get blocked, would 1 or 2 a months be sufficient?

Or would I better off with the smaller Clio? I want something that would keep costs down, and I may sell the car after a few months, or alternatively keep it, but it would sit unused for over a year (unless I can get someone to use it now and again).

Not sure that a 2002 206 2.0 diesel would have a DPF, but PSA did start fitting them earlier than other manufacturers. If it doesn't then it's probably the better bet. if it does, then go for the Clio because a new DPF costs more than the car is worth.
