Misfuelled my Volvo, now the dealer wants £800

I misfuelled my XC90 diesel this morning. Put 12 litres of petrol instead of diesel in the tank. I realised while filling it up, stopped and called Volvo.

Dealer just called back. They want to

- Remove tank
- drain it
- drain injectors.

Costs: £800.

Alternatively, they will only drain the tank and I will have to forgo warranty on engine/exhaust/injectors. Cost £300

I have 16 months warranty left.

Some questions:
Why does not Volvo fit special diesel caps like Ford?
Why is it so expensive?

The cynical side of me thinks it is because it is generating a juicy business.

But maybe I am too upset to think right.

A couple of months ago I put 9.3 litres of Shell Fuelsave petrol into my Mazda 5 diesel. I was in a hurry, so I topped up with V-Power diesel, put some Wynns lubricity additive in, then continued topping up with V-Power. 2,000 miles later I'm okay. Shame you mentioned it to the Volvo dealer or you might have got away with it.
