Excess oil consumption

My oil light came on so I went to Halfords to be sold 2l of oil for £21, own brand.

I was left with the distinct impression that only this oil would do and if I were stupid enough to put anything else - ie cheaper - I'd destroy the engine.

Have I just been conned? Do I really need to put their specially VW formulated oil in as opposed to the much cheaper Castrol on offer on the shelf below?

That's what VAG says. VAG also regards it as normal for its engines to use up to a litre in 600 miles. So you weren't conned buying the oil.
