Which 4x4 to buy used?

I'd like to buy a 4x4. So far it's between the X3 and Freelander 2 but I don't know which model to choose used/ used approved. 99% will be on road use.

I live in Brighton, so will use car to drive around town and to get out of town on A/B/Motorways but rarely off road ie when going camping in a grassy field.

Needs to be comfortable on rough roads, economical, and be able to cope with the forthcoming winter as I need to visit elderly parents and grit is like gold dust in Brighton.

Looking for fuel economy, comfort, resale, servicing costs and preferably below £25,000.

£25,000 buys you a new Outlander 2.2 4WD and various lower spec Freelander 2.2 4WDs, so why buy a used higher spec one? You won't get an F25 X3 for £25k, even a year old.

Bigger than original Freelander. 2.2-litre belt cam diesel. Incredibly good off-road. Robust interior. More fuel efficient 2WD model from 2011 with no rear diff to fail.
Handsome looks and plenty of kit, Mitsubishi chain cam 2.3 DI-D engine is excellent. 5 seats + 2 child seats. Very competent off-road with 4WD. Also available with 2WD.
Handling is impressive for an SUV, large boot capacity and lots of rear-seat space, top engine choices deliver serious performance.
